What are they? How do they work?
E-cigarettes or e-cigs are everywhere these days — bars, restaurants and even public transportation. A portable, handheld vaporizer or ‘vape pen’ looks like a pen. But, it could easily pass as a high-end electronic cigarette.
E-cigs house a battery-powered heating element that vaporizes liquid nicotine. Just like e-cigarettes, vape pens incorporate the same technology. However, instead of nicotine, vape pens work with concentrated cannabis oils, waxes or dry herbs.
Vape pens heat oils, waxes or dry herbs to approximately 400 °F or 205 °C — before combustion. This allows the user to inhale pure vapor without the harmful toxins found in smoke.
One thing to keep in mind is that not all vape pens offer the same functionality. Some vape pens only work with dry herbs and others exclusively with waxes and oils. So, what type of cannabis you prefer plays an important role in choosing the right vape pen.
Generally, most vape pens work best with cannabis concentrates (oils and waxes). For the pen to be effective, the oil needs to be liquid enough. If the substance is too thick, there is a good chance it will burn and produce smoke.
